Everyone aboard is dead, the flight of navy fighters that followed the plane in disappears, and someone who got on in Hong Kong isn't among the casualties, and things just get weirder from there. Emergency services are stretched to the breaking point, people are freezing to death in their homes, and the governor says no help is coming. You have been ordered to small rural town in northern Mexico to investigate the disappearance of a US mining executive and his family. You are a disparate group of agents and officials from a number of interested US agencies, deposited on a dusty landing strip a few miles from the town. Looking around, the heat seems oppressive for this time of year, and the landscape overly dry. If there is a definition of “hell on Earth” this seems to come pretty damn close.
An interesting twist to the whole affair: while Mexican Federales are usually quite reluctant to allow unfettered authority and jurisdiction by “gringos," in this case the regional Federales commander has been hands off, basically stating that you are on your own.
