What's In A Name: Naming Kids (& Other Things in Your Life) the Geek Way
Summary:
When naming kids, PCs/NPCs, Wi-Fi networks, pets, etc., you want the coolest (& coolest sounding) names and you want to know where they come from - movies, comics, novels, and more. Let's name stuff!
Description:
Naming new humans is a big responsibility, but it can be fun. And geeks love to name lots of things in their lives - beyond kids and pets, things like Wi-Fi networks, computers, cars, and of course PCs/NPCs offer the chance to customize your world and make it unique. What should you think about when picking a name? Should you choose a name that’s immediately recognizable from a specific character, or a “stealth” geek name? Finally, even once you’ve found a name you like you should consider nicknames, diminutives, and even fun elongated versions! Naming kids or characters (or anything really) the geek way requires some research, and what you discover on the journey may surprise you. Do you take a chance with a name that carries a lot of baggage from its ancient roots like Jason or Cassandra? Or stick with names that come from noble roots and are only ever applied to heroes?
This seminar - with ongoing Q&A, as time permits - will deal with concerns and issues involved with establishing a personal games collection/library. Various aspects will be discussed.
