Long Description:
Enjoy a guided historic tour (includes 2.2-mile round trip walk) through the heart of Indianapolis to the Athenaeum, where you’ll enjoy a 1-hour guided tour of the building. Built in 1894 and 1898 as Das Deutsche Haus, the Athenaeum remains true to the ethos of its German founders. Author Kurt Vonnegut’s architect grandfather designed the German gymnasium and clubhouse, which the author declared his favorite of all of his ancestor’s works. German-Americans created societies for music, recreation, political and philosophical discussion, theater, exercise, and more. The Athenaeum united all the German clubs under one roof. The tour will explore the evolution of the building from a German clubhouse to a hub of modern urban life, with a theater, YMCA, and Rathskeller, a restaurant/pub. Guests may enjoy a meal or drink at the Rathskeller or return with the group to the Convention Center.
