Both US and Japanese submarine forces had prepared dutifully for the Pacific War, but had their problems. The Japanese had perhaps the most impressive submarine forces in the world, but it was designed for and attempted to implement an unworkable doctrine, unchallenged as dogma. The US instantly embraced a workable strategy and had the platforms for it, but in small numbers and with a principal torpedo that didn’t work. Lecture will discuss initial successes and failures. Included: the Japanese submarine that fired the first shots of the war BEFORE the Japanese aircraft arrived over Pearl Harbor; USS Saratoga, torpedo magnet; sinking of USS Wasp; the only aerial bombing of the US ever; correction of the US torpedo problems and the beginning of the annihilation of the Japanese maritime lifeline. Fight choreographer and kungfu instructor Rick Stemm gives a workshop on martial arts and fight choreography specifically addressed to cosplayers. You will briefly learn stances, techniques, and moves to show off those giant swords, wizard staves, and other cool costume weaponry that you might not know how to use. Each costumed attendee will get work specifically focused on their character. No previous martial arts experience necessary.
